Well Behaved Women Rarely Make History

I am participating in Newsvine’s very own Survivor series. Which is slightly frightening, because I’m up against some really amazing people.

If you’d like to follow it, insert the following url into your feed reader:

http://survivor.newsvine.com/_feeds/rss2/master?articles&seeds

Or, just join Newsvine! That’d be even better, now wouldn’t it?

Of course, I’ll be cross posting all of my articles here on VikiBabbles, but you’ll want to read the work of all the others, just so you can see how much better I am. Plus, you should vote for me, because that’s how I’ll win. And I know you want me to win.

Actually, wait to join Newsvine until I invite you. That’s one of the challenges–to get the most people to join Newsvine and get them to write a post saying I got you to join. I expect your cooperation. ;)

Coming later: the continuation of Letters from the Past.

Alright, alright, so it’s been awhile… March 21, 2007

So sue me. Seriously. Go ahead. Sue me. I’d be happy to win a judgement against you for a frivolous lawsuit and take your house.

Some random stuff:

1. I’ve lived in this house for nearly 12 years, and we never got water in the basement until we carpeted it. I am currently running the shop vac, trying to keep on top of the water soaking my carpeting, while my husband is out on innumerable calls. He works for a company that has a contract to maintain the pump houses on Chicago’s expressways. I called him to see when he’d be home (secretly hoping it’d be soon, so he could take care of the basement water situation), and he informed me that he would be out for a very long time, probably all night, and that he was just at a flooded viaduct where search and rescue had to be called, because there’s a car trapped, and they’re reasonably sure there’s somebody trapped. That makes my water-logged carpeting seem like a very minor problem.

2. I’m leaving for Florida on Friday morning. I wrote an essay about my favorite piece of Florida for a class last semester, and I just published it on Newsvine (you all should REALLY join Newsvine. I’ll send you invites. Just let me know). You can read it HERE. Please leave comments. And join Newsvine. I am the Newsvine Drinking Contest Queen, two times running. And while some of you might not think that’s something to toot my damn horn about, that’s your problem. I’m tooting. Toot! Toot!

3. Um… I don’t have a 3.

While I’m in Florida, I will do my best to “borrow” the wireless connection of the guy who lives above my parents condo. It involves me sitting on the floor of the hallway, but I’ll do it. Because I’m addicted to the internet, mostly. But I’ll do it for you. I’ll try to be good and post some pics of the vacation. My husband is actually willing to set aside his hatred for Florida and come with us this year, so we’ll have fun. He and I have a running gin rummy tournament going (I’m so beating him).

I wish I were being better about posting on my ole blog here. There’s something awfully annoying about the way life cuts in on my blogging time. And Newsvine. I’m addicted to Newsvine. And you should be, too.

Where the hell have I been? March 14, 2007

Filed under: Blogging about Blogging, General Babbling — vikibabbles @ 11:11 am

I have no idea. I didn’t realize it had been two weeks since my last post. We had the stomach flu in our house last week, and various other time-sucking activities. I’ve also been spending more time than I should at Newsvine, and enjoying it very much. If you’d like to join Newsvine, leave me a comment and I’ll send you an invite. That way, I’ll get 10% of your advertising revenue. ;)

In the sidebar over there to the left, there’s a list of all my recent Newsvine articles. You can click and you will be brought directly there, and you will read and enjoy.

Other than that, I’ve just been busy with school. We’re leaving for Florida next week, and I will definitely enjoy some sun and sand and all that other stuff I enjoy when I’m in Florida, like my family, etc.

I’ll try to post something worth reading soon. Thanks to Duke of Earle and Badabing for calling my attention to my lack of posts (and generally wondering where the hell I’ve been).

I like it.

I also like pizza, but I don’t care if I get it from Lou Malnati’s or Pizza Hut, or Due’s, or I stick some frozen crap in the oven.

It’s still a plank of dough with sauce and cheese on it.

It’s the sauce and cheese that matters.  Actually, it’s just the sauce.  Mozzarella is pretty much still mozzarella, when you’re talking pizza.  It’s the sauce that makes it.

And my CONTENT is the SAUCE.  Granted, I haven’t written any sauce worth reading in months, but whatever.  I don’t care about the cheese.  I care about the sauce.

The crust, however, is a different story.  And while you might argue that the template is the crust, holding it all together, I beg to differ.  Actually, I beg to be in the right frame of mind to think up some clever way to differ with you on that.  Suffice it to say (because I said so) that this crust is holding this cheese and sauce together just fine.

Did I just compare my writing to pizza sauce?  Should I just start posting photographs of naked breasts?

The template, it is a’changin’ December 27, 2006

Filed under: Blogging about Blogging, General Babbling, I confess — vikibabbles @ 5:08 pm

Any of my long-time readers will roll their eyes at this post, because they’ve read a version of it many times before.  I have a template-changing addiction.  I am fully able to admit that, and for a while, I thought it was a bad thing, because people won’t recognize my blog when they see it.  But that’s stupid.  Because they only see it if they’ve come here on purpose, and it says Viki Babbles at the top.  Plus, as I’ve said before, during those times when I am posting less frequently, the template changes serve to freshen things up a bit.  That is also stupid.  There’s no substitute for good content, I’m aware of that.  I just don’t care.

Recently, I became enamored of a blog called 101 Reasons to Stop Writing.   First off, it’s funny and witty and all that good stuff.  It’s also very well written.  And, at first, I thought silly things like “Fuck you, telling me I should stop writing, who the hell are you?”  And then, I read more of it, and I thought, “Yeah, all those people who suck should really stop writing, but not me, of course.”  And then, I read still more, and I thought, “Sometimes I do suck.  I should stop writing.”  And then, I berated some of my students for using the phrase “and then” more than once in a piece of writing, because it is just about the laziest and most unimaginative transition EVAH.  What I should stop doing is being lazy about writing; not just blog posts (although I highly doubt I’ll ever stop being lazy about writing them, because I kind of think there’s a beauty to the dashed-off babble, plus that’s the whole POINT to this blog anyway), but about my writing in general.  Because I am lazy about it.  Not as lazy as I could be, but lazier than I should be.

The point is, the internet is chock-full of crappy writing.  It’s everywhere.  It’s annoying.  My brain is too small to even comprehend the vastness of the crappiness of the internet.  I cannot comprehend unlimited, unending space.  Full of crap.  It gives me a headache.  And I don’t want to be a contributor to the crap.

That said, you are probably expecting to read some kind of promise, or maybe a New Year’s Resolution, or a commitment that I hereby swear to post something well-written, well-thought-out and wonderful every day of the next year.  That would be stupid.  How long have you been reading this blog anyway?  Five minutes?  You know me better than that.  I will, however, promise to think about it.

Oh, and, what do you think of the template?  I had one similar to it a long time ago, but this one is jazzed up a little.  I have a preference for clean, white space.  After all, it is the content that is important here, right?  And navigation should be easy as well, because I know how often people spend hours on my site, clicking around, reading the archives, etc.  It’s almost never, actually, but if someone were to want to do that, I would want it to be easy for them.

I’ll be back, maybe this evening, with a review of a FANTASTIC book I got for Christmas.  I spent much of Christmas Eve reading passages of it aloud and laughing hysterically while my in-laws laughed at me for finding it so amusing.

Reservoir

Check it out! I will not make any public admissions about how well I know the woman who wrote this, or about the fact that I also write for Reservoir. There is no nepotism or anything unseemly involved here. I swear.

But I am most DEFINITELY going to buy Miss Molly several cocktails next time I see her.

Since I’ve felt compelled to change the look of my blog.  There’s a whole new crop of beautiful WordPress themes from the latest competition, and, never one to actually attempt to design anything my own self (despite several hundred dollars worth of CSS design books on my shelf), I’ve downloaded a new one.

I’ve got the colors set at orange and blue, in honor of the Bears, who I will shortly be going to watch defeat the Seattle Seahawks.

What do you all think?  Is it confusing?  Hard to navigate?  I’m not going to go to the trouble of messing with it until I’ve decided to keep it.

FYI, you can click on that “Options” button above and select your very own color scheme, so you can sit all day and read through my posts and enjoy your favorite colors!  Isn’t that cool?

I’m sure lots of exciting things will happen at the Bears game, and I’ll be sure to race right home afterwards and fill you all in on it.  See, because usually when I go to a game?  I stand around out by the concessions, smoking cigarettes and drinking beer, watching the game on a screen hanging over the beer stand.  And all kinds of great shit happens out there!

Filed under: Blogging about Blogging, General Babbling, This is Funny — vikibabbles @ 8:30 pm

I used to write some good shit.

Some of it was serious: A well-written previous entry from last November that nobody ever commented on until someone tried to comment spam it so I went back and read it.

Some of it is funny as hell, but really a meta-post because it’s all about blogging. And there’s nothing I hate more than bloggers blogging about blogging. That’s like cleaning ladies talking about cleaning while they’re cleaning. Or writers sitting around, talking about writing with their journals in their hands. It’s slightly annoying. But funny anyway: A post nobody read about my search strings.

Here’s an entry that got a crapton of comments: Drunken political blogging after a few too many, inspired by Pink, of all people. Although, I do adore her. For my own reasons. Although, does anyone else find it slightly ironic that she had that song/video lampooning the skinny, slutty starlets, and she frequently appears in her own videos in slinky, slutty garb?

Here’s a link to a Pink video. I like the song. I may have to go get this album. Or download it. Or something. Who knew? Don’t Let Me Get Me There’s another one, I saw the video for it yesterday morning when I was downtown and couldn’t sleep for the lightning and the thunder and all that, up at 3 a.m. watching fucking MTV, but I can’t find it, don’t know the name of it, yadda yadda, that’ll have to do.
OH. MY. GOD. I just realized I am doing a very blog-whorish thing, and that is to point out some of my older posts in place of actually writing a new post. How fucking pathetic is that? If you weren’t lucky enough, or smart enough, or paying enough attention, to see these posts the first time, why should I send you to them now? Because I’m lazy? Because I have nothing to write about? Because I’m pissed off that writing these damn posts used to come so easy and now it feels like work, and I look back and see how good some of them are and no one read them and oh, blah.

Blah.

Blah.
